Update - 03/31/09

Here’s the list of what I’ve updated.

  1. Power supply : I figured that it’s wise to use ATX power supply (commonly use for desktop power source) to provide enough amperage (current) to all solenoids. I lucked out to find one in the junk shelf along with power cord, then I jumped two wires from the terminal block - I had to ask this question to Daniel Rozin. He uses same thing for his wooden mirror. This turns out a great power supply, now I don’t need to worry about high amperage that most solenoids would consume.

  2. Solenoids : So far, I’ve tested five different types of solenoids including a car-door lock system. I hate to think this ‘journey’ was avoidable because this research gave me enough knowledge about using solenoids. The best one comes out is ‘Linear Solenoid, Continuous, Push, 12 Vdc, 1” Stroke, 20 Oz Force, ordered from mcmaster.com

  3. Rapid prototyping : I grabbed a cardboard box and put the circuits inside. On the top lid, I placed three solenoids upside-down (these are ‘pull’ type solenoids). When I turned it on and started pressing three buttons, Hani did show his interest trying to carefully touch the solenoid’s pin.
